Question #1
"What current technology do you feel possesses the greatest potential for influencing human change?"
JF:
The Internet.
Note: Mike Garson and I had a wonderfully long talk over the phone, and two answers came out, so we present both here for your enjoyment.
MG - A: (#1a) "It would actually be the technology of compassion and love. Which isn’t a technology the way people think of it, but in actual fact, it can be broken down into things like listening skills, respect for somebody, self-love, Love for others, care, and following one’s purpose and taking creative steps toward what makes one happy. This all generates the ability to help others. If you cannot love yourself it is very hard to love somebody else. So in that way it becomes a technology so that it becomes the study of what we are part of. That the core of our problems are really bad relationships, and the bad relationships whether it may be a husband and wife getting divorced, or a father and son, or a cousin or sister, those kinds of difficulties in relationships are basically a small version of what happens when there is fighting and war and crazy stuff going on in the world. Most people won’t make that connection, but it can’t hurt to clean up one’s act anyway and see if it helps. At the worst you will be a better person. Because if individual relationships as I described were handled through the things I said regarding love and compassion and respect we’d find that it could not happen on a global level. So everyone feeling turmoil in their own world is being reflected out there. Just take a look at all the horrible arguments and fights people and friends get into and multiply that by a whole planet and you will see some anger and rage and of course then it will turn into wars and terrorism Etc. and apparent other things to take your attention off what really needs to be looked at. So what’s good about it is that by applying these things that I am talking about and working on one’s self by having more compassion, by listening better, by embracing oneself and others in the truest sense of the word all people can begin to understand better who they are. If you try to handle the bigger problems without handling yourself you are going to lose. So it has to start from within. If you solve the problems from within and then talk about it on a global level, then you are an example and you are following through with who you are.
MG - A: (#1b)Well, it’s not called a technology, but love and compassion which could then be broken down into the study of the techniques of love and communication, compassion, having respect, developing good listening skills, people doing selfless acts, showing kindness, people starting to care more for others. The world’s global situation is really just a reflection of what’s going on inside. We have so many genius people from many different fields such as science, agriculture, and the arts, but the people have the hardest time talking to their wives or their kids. So when the world is having wars and the kinds of things going on, it’s just a larger scale version of people not being able to get along. People can build spaceships and so many great things but that’s not where the problem is. The problem lies with people being able to show love and compassion, care, be respectful and those kind of concepts. So it’s not a technology problem in the sense of how people look at technology, that’s not where the weakness lies. The weakness lies in people’s greed, selfishness and bad attitudes and power-trips. As one learns to experience and embrace those things and acknowledge it, which is the first step in handling any situation. That is to recognize there is a problem of some sort and acknowledge that. If you go into denial about it, and that is how some people treat their problems thinking they’ll go away and they wont have to look at them. It doesn‘t work that way."
SS:
It seems to me that nanotechnology holds great potential in medicine and improvement of efficiencies. I’d expand if I had the remotest idea of what I was talking about.
AU:
This is a toss up for me.
I think first and foremost not just computers but the internet. We’ve found a way after thousands of years to transfer data across time zones, languages and cultures within seconds by a series of codes and a bit of electricity satellite images, DNA samples, engineering schematics or even adds for new cars can traverse a space that couldn’t have even been dreamed of 300 years ago. The ability to communicate instantly brings minds and ideas together across oceans and mountains and can contribute to amazing things!
The other, is satellite technology and our underdeveloped space program. We can understand our earth, our solar system, even our universe like never before. Look at the amazing discoveries about our atmosphere satellite technology has brought us, or the images from the Hubble telescope. Even if the data seems “small” and not “mind blowing” at this time, science is a key to the foundation of our futures.
A:
Jail, because they learn their lessons. The computer.
SG:
You have the usual suspects: Computer, Internet, Video.. Computer/Internet as a human interface device used to connect to other humans you most likely would not have if you didn't have it.
Personal video gives us a visual into so many different points of view. We most likely would not have seen these ideas from others if it wasn't available to everyone as it is today. It has had to power to influence opinion and thought all on it's own without outside interference.
NS:
Genetic engineering. I think we’re on the way to significant breakthroughs in healthcare and famine prevention.
DB:
The internet!
